I started to stutter because I was really trying to figure out who I needed to explain myself to more, the person I was having dinner with or my friend who asked the question. So what was on my plate? The utter decadence that caused the commotion? A plate of pasta with meat sauce, a slice of italian bread, and a side of veggies. Wow! Shocking huh? So after the "yeller" left, I explained to my friend that I talk a lot about not eating complex carbs and grains, and maybe that was the reason for his outburst....a true GOTCHA moment.
So I thought I'd share this story with all of you too. Why was I breaking my own rule of no carbs. Actually, I don't have any true "rules" when it comes to foods. I believe that what works best for me may not work best for you. I have clients that I have on a completely grain free program for a time, and I have clients that eat a small amount of grains. The reason is because they have completely separate goals. It's not that I think grains are bad. It's that I believe there is little nutritional value in lots of the grains you see in stores today.
What do I do? My program currently is a little different in that I am working towards my first bodybuilding contest in June. During the week, Monday through Friday, I have no grains whatsoever. I only eat proteins and fats and veggies at every meal, and snack with nuts, fruits, cheese, etc. On the weekends, I completely load up on carbohydrates, which normally includes a fair amount of grains. I don't care about calories; I just eat. Why? Because I have periods of cycling my carbs to better utilize fat-burning and storage in my body. I load up on the weekends and use those reserves through the week without gaining fat. It works for me and has worked for me. I have a specific purpose of how I eat with a goal in mind. Would that work for you?
The science behind it works, but you probably don't have the same goals as me. So if you see me eating out, and I have a piece of cheesecake on my plate or am munching down on a piece of chocolate, or have my cheeks stuffed with Chicken parmesan, please realize that I am only human (lol). The way I eat is not the right way or wrong way. It is simply a way to eat.
