But I digress. I was asked how I do it, and I'll jot down my methods in a nutshell and explain it in a quick post. I have a couple of fitness competitors who are trying to grow, yet not put on a lot of fat weight. For them, What I have done is break up circadian rhythms, exercise, and nutrient timing on days they exercise and on days they are at rest. In addition, I do normally add some digestive aids that helps the body break down, regulate and cycle the foods consumed, and more specifically look at proteolytic enzymes to assist the body to break down proteins. As I have explained in a previous "2 1/2 in 2 1/2" video and in a previous blog post assisting your body to breakdown foods is the key to overall good health. But in this instance, my goals are to take advantage of the body's hormonal state as it pertains to the amount of activity planned for the day, whether exercising or at rest.
The plan involves periods of both extreme underfeeding for fat loss, and extreme overfeeding for muscle gain coupled with both training for fat loss and training for muscle gain (heavy weights). Basically you'll be in a fat-burning mode the majority of the time, eating lower carbs and calories. The rest of the time you'll either be sleeping, hitting the iron heavy and hard, or eating like a madman to drive protein synthesis, build muscle and take advantage of the anabolic hormones induced by the weight training and feeding schedule. Of course, it is certainly more detailed, but I believe (through personal experience), that it is entirely possible, over time to gain weight/muscle and not pack on a lot of fat in the process.
